I hadn’t realized before this class how many artist, never mind being digital or not, exist that are so interested in the relationship between science and form. Grey has a BS from UC Berkeley in Genetics, and an MFA from Yale- He is definitely a smart one. Maybe he didn’t go into the science aspect in his presentation because “we’re all art students”, but I wish he had. Though he didn’t go too deeply into the reasoning behind his work, the aesthetic quality is just as strong, and the piece can stand on its own. I liked his installation piece with the 21 parts laid out on the ground. Moving from left to right, a side of the object was removed, I think he said each one was supposed to represent a part of the body or personality. Michael Joaquin Grey has a very analytical view of things, yet his work still comes out organic, and maybe I’m wrong, but in my opinion, no where close to minimalism.
